III – OBJECTIVE

The goal of the Participatory Integrated Watershed Management Project (PIWAMP) is: "Agricultural productivity of poor rural communities increased by empowering them to undertake and maintain integrated water management activities that enhance their livelihoods and protect their natural resources.

The purposes of PIWAMP are:

  • The capacity of rural communities and service providers for planning, implementing, managing and maintaining watershed management activities sustainably strengthened.
  • Watershed development fund established and effectively disbursing in priority watersheds.

In the first 1 - 2 years, upland interventions will be further developed and promoted in 4-5 development areas to complement ongoing LADEP based lowland interventions. During a scaling up phase (years 3 - 4) the Project will build on the evolving experiences and lessons learnt into the consolidation phase that will focus on the sustainability of the investments made and support their maintenance by the target groups. The aim is to provide a model for ongoing funding and implementation of community identified land and water management activities.
